When they entered pet stores they were always catered to dogs and it seemed that the cat products were an afterthought. What’s your favorite part about only serving cats and cat people?

My shop is located in the village of Catskill, NY, and we go hard on the cat theme here: every summer, our main street is lined with 60+ cat statues, each one designed and decorated by a different artist. So opening a cat-themed shop was a no-brainer! I love being able to cater to cat-loving locals and visitors alike, with the shop representing not just cats as a whole but also our wonderful village of Catskill.

Who’s one of your favorite cats who comes into the store regularly?

In addition to running the shop, I also catsit for folks here in town. One of my clients visits on occasion with her two cats: Remy (in his stroller) and Sadie (on her harness)! It's always a treat to see them.

What’s your favorite part about only serving cats and cat people?

As a neuroscientist turned Master Cat Groomer, it is super rewarding to witness in real time a cat's quality of life improve over the course of a few hours. Seeing the positive impact our work has on a cat's person is icing on the cake.

What's a tip or insight about cat guardianship you often share with customers that you feel isn't common knowledge?

Cats need to be regularly bathed and groomed. Cats live healthier lives when they're not required to consume the debris and contaminants on their coat.

I love hearing all of the “gotcha day” stories! And seeing all of the glamour shots of customer’s kitties, like proud parents on picture day! It’s fun to see customers just light up and smile from ear to ear when they talk about their fur kids. 

What's a tip or insight about cat guardianship you often share with customers that you feel isn't common knowledge?

How important it is that your kitty gets as much hydration as possible, especially boy cats - the more wet food, the better. They require a lot more moisture in their diet than girl cats! Also that cats are just as social as or even more social than dogs. They need daily interaction through play and one-on-one time!

What's your favorite part about only serving cats and cat people?

General pet stores leave cats out, only having a small section of mostly food and litter. Meow City is a place where cats are the center of attention as they deserve! I select only the highest quality merchandise, with special focus on small producers, handmade and women owned businesses.
It's still unusual to see cats in backpacks around here, but I'm sure we're showing cat people what is possible. The cat donut is the bomb!

What's a tip or insight about cat guardianship you often share with customers that you feel isn't common knowledge?

It seems shocking but the knowledge of spay and neuter importance is still very low. I'm doing my best to explain how many kittens can be born in just one year within a small group of cats.

I love that I get to meet other people that are just as passionate and obsessed with cats as I am.

What's a tip or insight about cat guardianship you often share with customers that you feel isn't common knowledge?

My cat is a FIP survivor and before she was diagnosed I was completely unaware of this disease. A lot of people still think it’s a death sentence, but there is treatment out there and my cat Bean is proof that it can work.

One day I decided to try taking her outside with a Travel Cat harness and leash set (the only brand I sell) and the transformation was amazing.

She perked up as soon as she felt the wind and sun on her face. Her appetite improved and now walks are part of our daily routine. The shelter has added the requirement of supervised outdoor time to her adoption application and we're hoping she'll find a forever home soon."
