It's both light AND sturdy and our cat can sit comfortably inside or on top. The mesh is durable and breathable. The thoughtful touches - like the little straps that keep the zippers together - are an amazing bonus.
This backpack is one of the best purchases I have made for my kitten. So far, I have taken him to breweries, outdoor dining areas, parks, coffee shops, and hiking.
My only critiques is that it is bigger than I expected. I thought I would be able to bring him on planes with this backpack, but every airline I have looked at requires carriers that are smaller than this. It also hits my butt a little when I am walking, so he’s definitely jostling around in there a bit on walks (I’m 5’4” for reference).
However, even knowing this, I still would have gotten this backpack. It’s very comfortable for me and my cat and has lots of pocket space. I did a lot of research before buying this backpack, and I can assure you, this is the best one out there.

Posting a new review since I cannot edit my old 3 star review. I purchased this backpack and really enjoyed it, but had a problem with the frame slipping out while hiking with my cats. I wrote a review that the frame was my only issue. The company reached out to help me troubleshoot, even sending me a video of how to place the frame. We realized there was a small defect with the backpack that kept the frame from staying in. The company offered to send a new one or to send me the Fat Cat backpack in its place. They took time to talk to me about the frame and how it is a sturdier model.
Me and my boys received the Fat Cat backpack a couple weeks ago and love it! While the Navigator was great (other than the frame issue) the Fat Cat is perfect for both kitties. One of my boys is also more timid and likes to stay in the backpack while out and the enclosed area is great for making a shy adventure kitty feel more secure while giving him great views with the bubble. It has even made him more confident with going outside. My other cat can easily sit on the top of the pack while we walk around, as he likes an obscured 360 degree view.
